Choosing the right or best domain name and registering it properly is very important and considered among the first steps in developing, marketing or creating internet presence. Years ago, it was easy, now you must hope your appropriate domain name is no owned by a domain broker trying to make thousands off a process that administratively cost about $7 - $10. I know of those that have delayed spending the money to register only to find it now is owned by a domain broker wanting thousands to release it and those that have mismanaged their domain and lost it, in some cases not getting it back. Most domain names are manage through the original hosting service provider, but you must understand this is a separate issue and service. What I suggest and encourage, is that you use either a webmaster you TRUST or independant Domain Name Manager such as IPowerWeb.com, which is affiated to IPower.

By doing so, you can manage, change and update your Domain Name remotely and without interference from other sources or circumstances. You might change hosting service providers, webmasters or even employees that may make access to your domain registration difficult or even impossible. Only the Domain registrant (owner) needs access to Domain Name and (DNS) Domain Name Server records. Hosting, Publishing and Editing can be done by webmaster, employees and even the registrant from accessing the hosting account.

When you purchase a Domain Name you become the Domain Registrant, the entity you purchased it from is the domain registrar and should be ICANN approved. Kessler Associates, StartLogic, Ipower and GoDaddy are examples of Registrars or Resellers for Tucows OpenSRS. Tucows is among the largest ICANN accredited wholesale domain registrars under the entity of OpenSRS.com. The Registrar purchases the domain through the ICANN approved wholesaler whom in turn registers your domain, in your name with ICANN, Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, the keeper of domain name records and associates where you are through your contact information with where your website will be hosted though (DNS) domain name server records. Two Examples:

You Purchase Hosting and "Free Domain Name" from StartLoic. Your are the Registrant, StartLogic the Registrar. As a Tucows OpenSRS Reseller, this purchase is forwarded to Tucows, The ICANN Approved Wholesaler. Tucows then registers your domain with ICANN. This is all done in real-time for the most part. In this case your Hosting service and domain name are through the same provider, however StartLogic handles ONLY the hosting and forwards any Domain Concerns to Tucows (Usually Automated). Your Domain Name Server, Email Server and Hosting Server would be managed through StartLogic however your DNS Server would belong to Tucows.

You purchase Hosting from Startlogic and A Domain Name from IPOWER. You are the account holder for the hosting service and the registrant of the domain name with IPower. Ipower registers through Tucows with ICANN. Now your domain is with IPower and you have a hosing account with StartLogic, No Problem and this is encouraged. You can manage your DNS, Domain Name Server information through your account with IPower to Point your domain name to StartLogics servers.
